9/29/2014 11:19:25 AM Pursuant to a ruling by Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Dennis Langer, the Department of Corrections is changing the maximum expiration date of the prison term of KWS client Kevin Reinert’s to October 2, 2014. The three year reduction of the “out date” was based on a legal controversy regarding whether a mandatory prison term for a Firearm Specification can be run concurrently or must be consecutively. Judge Langer agreed that in this case it must run concurrently, and contrary to the legal interpretation of the sentence by the Department of Corrections. Welcome home Kevin !
8/18/2014 11:05:49 AM In June, 2014, KWS filed a petition for certiorari in the U.S. Supreme Court in Goins v. Lazaroff, case no. 13-1517, seeking to overturn the 84-year prison term imposed on a juvenile defendant for non-homicide offenses. On July 31, 2014, the KWS petition was selected as “petition of the day” by the award winning scotusblog.com which exclusively covers the caseload and jurisprudence of the US Supreme Court. According to scotusblog.com: “The ‘Petition of the day’ posts feature petitions that are likely to appear on our ‘Petitions to watch’ list when they are scheduled for consideration by the Justices. ‘Petitions of the day’ are those that [Publish Tom Goldstein] has identified as raising one or more questions that have a reasonable chance of being granted in an appropriate case.” The justices of the U.S. Supreme Court will vote on September 29, 2014, on whether to accept the appeal in Goins v. Lazaroff for further review.
